The Role of Libraries in Social Justice and Civic Engagement: A Virtual Webinar & Book Launch

By Emma Baronak on Dec 23, 2021
webinar Throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals and communities have found it difficult to access necessary digital technologies and critical information regarding health and safety. This has led to digital inequity within underprivileged groups as well as an increase in misinformation regarding COVID-19. The roles of social justice and civic engagement are integral to the facilitation of health and wellness literacy for all. The overall goal of libraries, archives, and museums is to foster an individual user’s intellectual growth. This is facilitated by advocacy for social justice, civic engagement, and outreach for cross-cultural competency. The ability of libraries, archives, and museums to offer these services is essential for the overall health and wellbeing of individuals and their communities.
The Handbook of Research on the Role of Libraries, Archives, and Museums in Achieving Civic Engagement and Social Justice in Smart Cities explores the imperative need for equal access to essential literacy programs and community-led services. In his book, Dr. Mohammed Taher, Chief Information Officer of the Canadian Multifaith Federation, provides critical insight on the application of tools and techniques to achieve vital civic engagement.

Despite increasing acceptance and legalization of cannabis in some US states, disparities persist in federal marijuana laws, exacerbated by the Biden administration's classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug. This inconsistency leads to unfair penalties in the criminal justice system, where individuals in legal states can still face federal prosecution.
