Introduction

This new edited volume collects voices of educators and researchers, centering around questions and case studies of the ways that readers and viewers experience stories and sensemaking across media, from prose/print to comics to film and digital media, and beyond. Special emphasis is given to the ways that young adult/adolescents explore literacy across forms.

Objective

This book examines the use of popular storytelling and characters to add on to existing conversations about what literacy means for readers and viewers now, how reading is defined, and how young people navigate the many narrative tools at their disposal. This notion of transmedial storytelling builds on the work of scholars like Jennifer Rowsell and Henry Jenkins, as well as the explorations of literacy by scholars like Gunther Kress and James Gee.
